Shouting from the rooftop
No matter how many levels you create, youâll eventually reach the rooftop. Once you get there, donât stand still and shout look at me! To sell your book in large quantities, aim for media attention. In your âvirtual sales departmentâ youâve already been busy with the business end of things, arranging for signings and getting the book into a few stores and other venues. Send out Media Releases to newspapers and other publications. Non-fiction is easier to advertise. If youâre an expert in your field, youâll get noticed. For fiction, find a âhookâ in your novel tying into current news. If thatâs not possible, find a more generic theme to use for promotion. Does your story involve a mother-daughter relationship? If itâs near Motherâs Day youâve got a ready-made angle. If you really work at it, youâll find numerous ways to tie your book to news or calendar events. Aim for radio or even television. Why not? But donât expect producers to be interested in having you on a show because you âwrote a bookââthey probably did too! Unless youâre a celebrity youâll have to work at it. Use your platform theme or author brand to grab their interest. Does your novel include a recovering alcoholic character? Where did the idea come from? Creativity is an asset but donât lie. Donât pretend youâre that recovering alcoholic if it isnât true. Someone will find out. A scandal will help sell more books at first, but where will your career be after that? Critics will tear up your book and use the pages as TP then flush it down you-know-whereâ¦
